Colourama Drama, Sheffer Gallery, 2021
Gallery 2 features a collection of paintings and sculpture by Greg Clarke that were exhibited in Colourama Drama, a solo exhibition at Sheffer Gallery in Sydney presented by Damien Minton. In these colourful geometric abstract paintings and sculptures, the natural and the architectural morph together. The joyous juxtaposition of colours creates a bold visual drama that breaks out of the simple linear structure of the grid. Although strong horizontal, vertical and angled lines form the basis of the work, the planes of contrasting and complementary colour combinations bounce off each other, imbuing each work with its own unique balance, energy and rhythm.
“This suite of paintings and sculptures build upon my ongoing journey into colour and the geometric forms, lines and patterns of nature and architecture. I live within a subtropical rainforest on the mid north coast of NSW, bordered on one side by the Pacific Ocean and the other side by a vast sweeping valley of green farm land. The tall straight lines of the forest tree trunks, the blues and greens of the always changing coastline, sculptural granite boulders and the simple architectural forms of old farm sheds have all inspired these various works. Starting with pencil drawings of abstract forms I lay down intersecting angular plans of colour with textured Zen-like brush strokes, with one colour calling forth another until a final composition is reached. Sometimes the paintings can come together very quickly at other times it’s a long journey of paintings being reworked over and over again. The sculptures were initially inspired by the paintings, which in turn started to influence the paintings. Many thanks to Adelaide based sculptor Tony Rosella for helping me create the sculptures in his George Street Studios and introducing me to working with aluminium.’’ Greg Clarke
